Emerging Trends in the MENA Art Market

The MENA art market is experiencing a notable transformation, highlighted by a $17.3 million total achieved at Sotheby’s inaugural auction in Saudi Arabia and the upcoming launches of Art Basel Qatar and Frieze Abu Dhabi in 2026. According to ArtTactic’s Global Art Market Outlook report, 76 percent of experts express optimism about the region, attributing this growth to long-term investments in cultural infrastructure and government-backed partnerships with international museums and auction platforms. In 2025, international auction houses captured 65.1 percent of the MENA market, with Christie’s reporting a 73 percent increase in sales, reaching $10.2 million, the highest since 2017.

Shifts in Artist Representation and Sales

While Iranian art remains dominant, accounting for 27.3 percent of total sales value, it has seen a sharp decline of 41 percent year-over-year. In contrast, Lebanese, Egyptian, and Iraqi artists experienced significant gains, with sales increasing by 33.4 percent, 47.8 percent, and 62.4 percent, respectively. Notably, Lebanese women artists accounted for 44 percent of total sales by women artists from the region in 2025.

Etel Adnan emerged as the top-performing MENA artist in 2025, achieving $2.54 million in sales, while Turkish digital artist Refik Anadol saw a dramatic rise to $1.02 million, driven by the sale of his digital artwork "A Goal in Life: Leo Messi x Refik Anadol," which fetched $1.87 million at Christie’s. Syrian artist Louay Kayyali also made headlines with a record-breaking sale of $900,000 for his painting "Then What ?? (1965)."

Gender Dynamics in the Art Market

The MENA art market is witnessing a shift towards greater gender parity, with auction sales by women artists rising 34.6 percent to $9.6 million in 2025. A total of 116 women artists participated in global auction sales, reflecting an increased representation and sell-through rate of 87.2 percent. Notable figures include Samia Halaby, whose works have gained renewed attention, and Saloua Raouda Choucair, whose sculptures continue to perform well at auction.

Official Statements & Responses

ArtTactic's report highlights the growing international visibility and price of MENA art, emphasizing the importance of sustained investment in cultural infrastructure. The report notes, “The market for art from the region is growing in both international visibility and price,” indicating a positive trajectory for MENA artists.

Criticism & Opposition

Despite the overall growth, the decline in Iranian art sales raises concerns about the impact of the current regime on local and expatriate collectors. Critics argue that the shifting priorities among these collectors could further affect the market dynamics in the region.
