Disputed Border Conflict Displaces Cambodian Families

The ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has intensified, resulting in significant territorial changes and the displacement of numerous Cambodian families. Following clashes last year, Thai forces have taken control of several patches of disputed land along the 800-kilometer border, leading to the destruction of homes and livelihoods for many residents.

More than 1,200 families from the villages of Chouk Chey and Prey Chan have been displaced and are currently residing in temporary shelters, such as a local temple in Banteay Meanchey Province. Kim Ren, a resident whose home was bulldozed by Thai forces, expressed despair over her situation, stating, “The Thais reset us to zero. We don’t have any more hope.” Many displaced individuals have lost not only their homes but also their businesses, with Kim Ren citing a loss of approximately US$80,000 in property and inventory.

Thai military operations have reportedly reclaimed about 64 hectares of land in the contested areas. Army spokesman Winthai Suvaree emphasized the need for careful action during these operations due to the presence of civilians. The military's actions have been met with mixed reactions, as some Thai farmers anticipate benefits from the newly controlled land, while others express sorrow over the conflict's impact on their Cambodian neighbors.

The roots of the conflict date back to the French colonial era, which established the current demarcation of the border. Tensions have escalated over the years, culminating in violent clashes that have resulted in dozens of casualties and the displacement of over one million people. The recent fighting has reignited long-standing grievances between the two nations.

Local residents have voiced their frustrations regarding the conflict. Sok Chork, a farmer displaced from Prey Chan, lamented, “The Thais just robbed us of everything,” while another Thai farmer, Anupong Kannongha, expressed his pain over the destruction of his home, attributing blame to Cambodia. These sentiments highlight the complex emotions surrounding the conflict, as individuals on both sides grapple with loss and displacement.

The Thai military has framed its actions as necessary for national security and territorial integrity. However, the humanitarian impact on Cambodian families has drawn criticism from various observers. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions about the future allocation of the reclaimed land and the potential for further conflict.
