Ortiz's attorney, Christos N. Georgalis, has filed a motion to sever his client's case from Clase's, arguing that the two players have "markedly different levels of culpability." He contends that Ortiz's lack of direct communication with bettors could lead to an unfair trial if the jury is presented with the extensive evidence against Clase, which includes dozens of communications with bettors and cash transfers. A judge has instructed prosecutors to provide evidence regarding suspicious pitches to Clase's attorneys to prepare for trial, which is scheduled for May 4, 2026.
