Birmingham-based indie band Swim Deep is set to release their fifth album, 'Hum', on June 19, 2024, through Submarine Cat Records. The album follows their previous work, 'There’s A Big Star Outside', and has been shaped significantly by new guitarist J.J. Buchanan, who joined the band after Austin "Ozzy" Williams met him during his bartending job. The band spent two weeks in the wood-panelled ICP Studios, where they aimed to refine their sound and lyrics, focusing on introspective themes of family and personal growth. Williams noted that the album's guiding principle is that “each song should go on a journey,” a sentiment reflected in tracks like ‘Mud’ and ‘Broken’.

The creation of 'Hum' coincided with significant life events for Williams, including the birth of his daughter, Mary, and the passing of his partner's father. He described the emotional turmoil as “mind-splitting,” stating, “You’re mourning, you’re trying to be sensitive, and you don’t want to put any of that on the child.” This duality of joy and grief is encapsulated in his description of the album as one that can be summed up as “live, loss, love.”
