This trend contrasts sharply with only 21% of baby boomers participating in similar activities. Many young professionals are increasingly viewing their primary jobs not as the sole source of financial security but as a foundation for pursuing diverse interests and passions. Aashna Doshi, a software engineer at Google, exemplifies this shift, balancing her corporate role with content creation and podcasting. She emphasizes the importance of creative outlets, stating, “I can represent myself as an individual with all these ambitions, skills and passion.”

Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor, notes that traditional pathways to success, such as obtaining a college degree and securing a stable job, have not yielded the expected financial rewards for many young Americans. The tech industry, in particular, has faced significant layoffs, with over 150,000 jobs lost in the past year alone. This precarious job market has led individuals like Yeong Yuh Lee, a freelance illustrator, to rely on side hustles for income after losing her full-time position. Lee states, “I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t hustle for clients outside of my in-studio job.”
