2/12/2026, 2:32:47 PM

Launching a New Era in Film Distribution

Stockholm-based streaming platform Cultpix is set to enter the physical media market by launching a new Blu-ray label in partnership with national film institutes from Hungary, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, and Estonia. This initiative will debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026, marking a significant expansion for the cult and exploitation cinema platform. The Blu-ray label will initially feature four restored titles: “Meteo” (1990) from the National Film Institute Hungary, “Fantasy of the Deer Warrior” (1961) from the Taiwan Film & Audiovisual Institute, “The Man from the First Century” (1962) from Národní filmový archiv in Prague, and “Madness” (1968) from the Estonian Film Institute. The first release, “Meteo,” will be showcased at Cannes, with subsequent titles scheduled for monthly releases.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

Cultpix's foray into physical media builds on its existing collaborations with 11 national film institutes and archives that currently supply content for its streaming service. The company is also in discussions with additional rights holders for future releases. This move mirrors the trajectory of its Swedish sister company, Klubb Super 8, which has successfully operated its own Blu-ray label for over 25 years, focusing on Swedish cinema. Klubb Super 8 relaunched its label at Cannes in May 2025, releasing titles such as “The Year of Christina Lindberg” and various co-productions.

In addition to Blu-ray releases, Cultpix plans to organize theatrical screenings of selected titles from its catalog, aiming for a multi-platform distribution strategy. Rickard Gramfors, CEO of Cultpix, stated, “Our expansion into Blu-ray comes from years of understanding exactly which titles connect with global audiences.” He emphasized that the insights gained from their streaming platform, combined with partnerships with film institutes, enable Cultpix to identify films that merit premium physical releases.

Broader Implications for Film Preservation

The establishment of the Blu-ray label signifies a growing trend in the film industry towards preserving and promoting cult and exploitation cinema. By collaborating with national film institutes, Cultpix not only enhances the visibility of these films but also contributes to the preservation of cinematic heritage. The company plans to present its expanded slate at Berlin’s European Film Market, where it will seek additional content for both digital and physical distribution channels.

Criticism & Opposition

While the initiative has been largely welcomed, some critics argue that the focus on cult and exploitation films may overshadow more mainstream cinematic works that also deserve preservation and attention. However, Cultpix maintains that their audience has expressed a strong desire for these specific titles, indicating a niche market that is often overlooked.

What's Next

Cultpix is expected to announce additional release titles later this year, further expanding its catalog and solidifying its position in both the streaming and physical media markets. The company’s innovative approach to film distribution may set a precedent for other platforms looking to diversify their offerings.
