Telegram CEO Condemns Russian Restrictions as Users Turn to VPNs

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has publicly condemned the Russian government's recent decision to impose restrictions on the messaging app, asserting that he will continue to resist government censorship "no matter the pressure." The Russian communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, confirmed the implementation of "consistent restrictions" on Telegram, citing the need to ensure compliance with Russian legislation and to protect citizens. The regulator accused Telegram of not adequately safeguarding personal data or combating criminal activity on its platform. Durov, however, characterized these justifications as an "authoritarian move," arguing that the restrictions aim to push citizens toward a state-controlled app designed for surveillance and political censorship.

Mazai Banzaev, the founder of AmneziaVPN, indicated that the company had been preparing for potential Telegram blocks for about six months, expressing surprise that the restrictions were implemented later than expected.
