Innovative Approach to NASCAR Sponsorship
As the 2025 Daytona 500 approached, Sarah Turner Wells faced the challenge of enhancing the hospitality experience for Legacy Motor Club, a team co-owned by Jimmie Johnson. With only three weeks to prepare, Wells aimed to create a unique atmosphere for corporate partners that would stand out in the NASCAR landscape. Johnson emphasized the need for a hospitality experience that could rival the allure of Formula 1, aiming to attract influencers and celebrities to the sport. “I’ve been bummed that other teams haven’t leaned into it. But ownership here at Legacy really believes in it,” Johnson stated.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
Wells, drawing on her extensive background in hospitality, enlisted two Michelin-rated chefs from Los Angeles to execute the ambitious plan. The team faced significant logistical hurdles, including limited kitchen facilities at Daytona International Speedway. Most food preparation had to occur off-site, utilizing residential kitchens at a nearby Wyndham timeshare property. “Everybody’s fridge was packed — everybody’s,” Wells recalled, highlighting the improvisation required to meet Johnson's vision.
The menu featured upscale items such as smashburger sliders, bourbon milkshakes, and sirloin cheesesteaks, which facilitated networking between Legacy leadership and potential sponsors. The event proved successful, leading to a business deal between two major sponsors and prompting discussions about expanding the hospitality concept to future races.
Expanding the Vision
Following the Daytona event, Legacy Motor Club planned a similar upscale hospitality experience for the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. To further enhance the culinary offerings, Wells hired Duyen Ha, a Michelin-trained chef with a fresh perspective on NASCAR hospitality. Ha's experience in high-pressure cooking environments, such as her time on the show "Chopped," equipped her to handle the unique challenges of catering at racetracks. “I knew I needed somebody with insane grit,” Wells explained regarding her selection process.
Ha's innovative menus, which included local flavors and ingredients, contributed to the success of subsequent events, including nine additional hospitality experiences throughout the 2025 season. Each event was tailored to reflect the local culture and sponsors, reinforcing Johnson's commitment to raising the bar in NASCAR hospitality.
Looking Ahead
For the 2026 NASCAR season, Legacy Motor Club is set to continue its upscale hospitality initiative, with 15 races on the schedule. The introduction of a luxury hospitality coach aims to address previous logistical challenges, providing a dedicated space for food preparation and guest entertainment. Johnson expressed optimism about the ongoing evolution of the hospitality experience, stating, “Creating the experience at the track is going to bring in new fans, and the new fans are going to bring in new partners.”
As Legacy Motor Club seeks to blend fine dining with the excitement of NASCAR, the team remains focused on offering unique experiences that resonate with both existing and potential sponsors. Johnson concluded, “There’s a cool way to offer moonshine and Kobe burgers and whatever you want it to be.”
