However, recent advancements by various space agencies and private companies, including the UK Space Agency and start-ups like Space Solar, have moved these ideas closer to reality through hardware testing and orbital demonstrations.

Economic Viability and Future Prospects

The report, commissioned in 2021 by former Conservative business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, suggests that while the initial costs of space-based solar power would be high, they are expected to decrease significantly as technology advances. Projections indicate that costs could fall to between £87 and £129 per megawatt hour (MWh) by 2040, making it competitive with other energy sources. For comparison, new nuclear energy is predicted to cost around £150 per MWh, while recent offshore wind contracts have seen prices of approximately £90 per MWh for fixed turbines and £216 per MWh for floating wind.

To support the development of this technology, the report suggests that operators of space-based power stations could be offered contracts for difference, ensuring a guaranteed minimum price for the electricity generated. This subsidy model is similar to those currently used to support renewable energy sources like wind.

Despite the innovative nature of this proposal, there are concerns regarding the feasibility and practicality of deploying solar farms in space. Critics argue that the high initial investment and technological challenges may hinder the project's implementation.
