Alan DeKok: Pioneering Network Security Through FreeRADIUS

Alan DeKok's career in network security began unexpectedly when a side project evolved into a 27-year professional journey. Initially studying nuclear physics at Carleton University, DeKok transitioned to computing, where he co-founded the FreeRADIUS Project in the late 1990s. DeKok's early life on a farm outside Ottawa, where he cultivated strawberries and raspberries, contrasted sharply with his later interests in technology. His academic pursuits in physics, including a master’s degree focused on a water-purification system for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, equipped him with problem-solving skills that proved invaluable in his computing career. After working as a software developer at Gandalf and CryptoCard, he recognized a gap in the market for open-source RADIUS servers, leading to the creation of FreeRADIUS.

Since its inception, FreeRADIUS has grown significantly, now supporting an estimated 100 million users daily. DeKok founded InkBridge Networks in 2008 to maintain and support the software, which operates largely behind the scenes, akin to a building foundation that is crucial yet often overlooked. While Diameter gained some traction in mobile applications, it has not matched the widespread implementation of RADIUS, which remains favored for its simplicity.
