Ukraine Faces New Drone Threat as Russia Deploys Mothership Tactics

Ukraine is confronting an escalating threat from Russian forces utilizing "mothership drones," which are large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) capable of carrying and launching smaller first-person-view (FPV) drones. This tactic significantly extends the operational range of FPV drones, which previously had a limited range of 20–30 kilometers (10-20 miles), allowing them to strike targets deep within Ukrainian territory. Serhii Beskrestnov, adviser to Ukraine's Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov, highlighted that these mothership drones can remotely control FPVs from within Russia, complicating interception efforts for Ukrainian air defense units.

The introduction of FPVs carried by Shahed drones presents a dual threat to Ukrainian air defense systems. Beskrestnov noted that one Shahed drone can carry two FPVs, which can operate for up to 45 minutes and reach speeds of approximately 150 km/h. This capability makes interception increasingly challenging, as air defense crews must now prepare for secondary attacks from detached FPVs after engaging the mothership. The use of fiber-optic-linked FPVs, which are resistant to electronic warfare countermeasures, further complicates the situation, as they can bypass standard defenses.

In response to the heightened drone threat, Ukraine is considering implementing a passport verification requirement for the purchase of local SIM cards. This measure aims to limit the ability of Russian operators to control FPVs using Ukrainian mobile networks. Beskrestnov acknowledged that while this step could help curb the "uncontrolled process" of SIM card sales, it is politically unpopular and would necessitate legislative changes. He pointed out that in Russia, SIM cards are typically sold with identification, but they can still be acquired through illicit means.
