Newborn Giraffe Eugene Captivates Visitors at Toledo Zoo

Toledo Zoo & Aquarium in Ohio has welcomed a four-week-old baby giraffe named Eugene, born on January 17. Weighing approximately 130 pounds at birth, Eugene has quickly become a favorite among zoo visitors due to his playful personality and distinctive tuft of hair atop his head.

Eugene is the first calf of mother Lily, while father Rocket has previously sired other offspring. Since his introduction to the existing herd of seven giraffes, Eugene has settled in well, with zoo staff noting that both he and the other giraffes have shown interest in one another. Jennifer Brassil, a representative from the zoo, remarked, “He’s growing into his own personality,” highlighting the calf's integration into the herd.

Currently, visitors can observe Eugene through indoor viewing windows. His outdoor debut is anticipated for this spring, contingent on rising temperatures, as the zoo typically restricts outdoor access for giraffes until the weather reaches around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Brassil stated, “So he probably won’t be making his debut in his outdoor exhibit until this spring when it warms up a bit.” The excitement surrounding Eugene has been palpable, with many fans expressing their affection for him on social media.
