San Antonio Food Bank Launches Appleseed Apartments to Combat Housing Insecurity

In New Braunfels, Texas, the rapid population growth has exacerbated the challenge of finding affordable housing. Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, identified an opportunity to address this issue when he discovered a vacant lot adjacent to the food bank's New Braunfels branch. Cooper emphasized the connection between food insecurity and housing costs, stating, “What we know about a food-insecure household is that rent eats first in every household budget.” By providing food assistance, the food bank aims to alleviate some financial pressure, allowing families to allocate their resources towards housing.

In collaboration with the McKenna Foundation and NB Housing Partners, the San Antonio Food Bank is overseeing the construction of the Appleseed Apartments, which will feature 51 units specifically designed for families with children. These apartments will be available for rent for a duration of 24 to 36 months, targeting families earning 80% or less of the area’s median income. The initiative aims to support families in transitional phases, helping them achieve stability before moving on to make room for others in need.

Residents of Appleseed Apartments will have access to various resources, including financial literacy classes and a stipend to assist them during their transition out of the apartments. Cooper remarked on the evolution of the food bank's mission, stating, “In some ways, there was this thought that … we don’t do housing; we do food. But after the journey, we were like, what do we do? We do people.”
