Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he is working on a new album featuring previously unreleased and unfinished material from the late Eddie Van Halen. In an interview with Brazilian YouTube channel KazaGastão, Alex revealed that he is collaborating with guitarist Steve Lukather, a longtime friend of Eddie's, to finalize the tracks. The album will consist of recordings intended for the next Van Halen project before Eddie's passing in October 2020.
Alex emphasized the importance of quality in the release, stating, “We’re not gonna release it in its embryonic form because it wouldn’t make any sense. It has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it.” He confirmed that the drums, guitar, and bass have already been recorded, with Wolfgang Van Halen playing the bass parts.
Vocalist Search
A significant challenge remains in finding a suitable vocalist for the project. Alex initially considered Paul Rodgers, the former frontman of Free and Bad Company, but he declined due to health issues. Alex noted, “What we didn’t have is a vocalist... Luke and I are looking for somebody right now.” He expressed the need for a singer who shares a similar musical background, stating, “We gotta find somebody in that age group who was exposed to the same musical experience that we have. Otherwise, it doesn’t have the depth.”
Alex also mentioned Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin as an ideal candidate, although he acknowledged that Plant is currently touring and not available.
Collaboration with Steve Lukather
Alex described Lukather as the “connective tissue” of the project, praising his versatility and ability to enhance the unfinished material. He stated, “Luke can play anything… he knows where to put the solo, as far as structure and organization.” This collaboration aims to ensure that the final product meets the high standards set by the Van Halen legacy.
Emotional Context
The project carries emotional weight, as it is a tribute to Eddie Van Halen, who passed away from cancer complications at the age of 65. Alex reflected on their long-standing relationship, emphasizing the personal connection behind the music. He stated, “Ed and I had a lot of stuff that we made... that we never let go.”
Lukather, who has expressed deep sorrow over Eddie's passing, remarked on the significance of their friendship, saying, “This is a hole in my heart that won't go away. He was a real friend of mine.”
