Yuen Woo-ping Revives Wuxia with "Blades of Guardians"

"Blades of Guardians," directed by Yuen Woo-ping, marks the filmmaker's return to feature films after a seven-year hiatus. The film is based on Xu Xianzhe’s graphic novels and follows bounty hunter Dao Ma, portrayed by Wu Jing, who is the "second most wanted fugitive" during the Sui dynasty (581-618). The narrative centers on Dao Ma's quest to escort a rebel leader across the desert to safety in Changan, facing various adversaries, including rival bounty hunters and soldiers from different clans.

Yuen Woo-ping emphasizes authenticity in his filmmaking, opting for real horses and actual desert locations rather than relying on visual effects. He states, “Getting shots in camera has always been my way of working.” His extensive experience in martial arts cinema, including choreographing iconic films like "Drunken Master" and "The Matrix," informs his approach to fight choreography, which he describes as a dialogue between characters, where each movement serves to advance the story.

The casting process for "Blades of Guardians" was crucial, as Yuen aimed to capture the essence of the characters from the graphic novels. He highlights the challenge of pairing actors with roles that require both martial arts skills and acting talent. Wu Jing, Jet Li, and Max Zhang, all wushu champions, bring a unique physicality to their performances, enhancing the film's action sequences. Yuen notes, “There is a gracefulness in the movements and physicality of wushu that is perfect for a period film like this.”

Tony Leung Ka-fai, known for his versatility, portrays Chief Mo, adding emotional weight to the film. Yuen acknowledges Leung's readiness to learn martial arts for the role, stating, “Tony is a very professional actor.” The film's structure allows for character development through various encounters, culminating in a significant emotional climax between Dao Ma and Di Ting, former allies turned adversaries.

Yuen views "Blades of Guardians" as a foundation for potential future installments, given the expansive universe of Xu’s graphic novels. He expresses a desire to innovate within the genre, stating, “Every filmmaker and every actor should find their own voice in this genre.” After a four-year production process, Yuen plans to take a break before considering the next steps for the franchise.
