Escalating Russian Attacks on Ukraine: A Recent Surge in Violence

In a series of coordinated assaults, Russia has intensified its military operations against Ukraine, resulting in significant casualties and damage across multiple regions. Over the past few days, Russian forces launched a combination of drones and missiles targeting civilian infrastructure and populated areas, leading to injuries and fatalities among the Ukrainian population.

On February 17, Russian forces executed a major mass attack, deploying a total of 396 long-range drones and various types of missiles, including Iskander-M and Kh-101 cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted a majority of these attacks, with reports indicating that 367 drones and all cruise missiles were neutralized. However, some missiles and drones penetrated the defenses, striking 13 locations and injuring at least 25 individuals, including children. Notably, one civilian, a 68-year-old woman, was killed in the Sumy Oblast during these strikes.

The following day, February 18, the situation worsened, with reports indicating that at least five people were killed and 30 others injured. Russian forces launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 126 drones, with Ukrainian air defenses intercepting 100 of these drones. Despite these efforts, one missile and 23 drones reached their targets, impacting 14 locations. The attacks particularly affected Donetsk Oblast, where three fatalities were reported in Mykolaivka, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where a 54-year-old man was killed.

The recent assaults have not only resulted in loss of life but have also severely impacted civilian infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the attacks have left cities without heating and water supply, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The Energy Ministry reported widespread power outages across Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Sumy Oblasts, affecting over 99,000 consumers. Emergency power cuts and planned outages have been implemented in response to the damage inflicted by the strikes.
