The Human Toll of the Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

As the war in Ukraine approaches its fifth year, the human cost continues to mount. Halyna Popriadukhina, a 65-year-old resident of Dzenzelivka, has been displaced three times due to the advancing Russian military. She is one of nearly 4 million internally displaced individuals within Ukraine, in addition to over 5 million who have fled to Europe. Popriadukhina's story reflects the broader tragedy faced by many Ukrainians, as they grapple with the loss of homes and loved ones amid the ongoing conflict.

The war's epicenter lies in the Donbas region, which includes the industrial areas of Donetsk and Luhansk. Control of this territory is pivotal in U.S.-backed peace negotiations, with Russia demanding that Ukraine cede the remaining 20% of Donetsk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has firmly rejected this demand, despite reports that U.S. mediators suggested it could lead to peace. "We can't just withdraw," Zelenskiy stated, emphasizing Ukraine's commitment to its territorial integrity.

Popriadukhina's life changed dramatically on February 24, 2022, when Russian missiles struck as she was milking cows. Following her son's urging, she fled her home, leaving behind her livestock and possessions. After a brief return to the Donetsk region, she was forced to evacuate again as Russian forces advanced. Currently, she resides in an abandoned house in Dzenzelivka, where the community honors fallen soldiers in a designated "Alley of Heroes."

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant territorial losses for Ukraine, with Russia occupying approximately one-fifth of the country. Despite the resilience of Ukrainian forces, the Norwegian Refugee Council has reported that internal refugees are increasingly struggling to survive as aid diminishes and financial resources dwindle. Many families are resorting to precarious living conditions, compromising their health and heating needs.

Popriadukhina's personal anguish is compounded by uncertainty regarding her two sons. One son was hospitalized in Mariupol when Russian troops took control, while the other, who enlisted, has been missing since 2023. Her emotional turmoil is palpable as she expresses her anger towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, "He brought suffering to so many people."

The war's impact extends beyond physical displacement; it has left deep emotional scars on individuals and families. Popriadukhina's plea for understanding encapsulates the broader sentiment of many affected by the conflict: "How can you forgive this?"
