South Asian Cinema Celebrated at BAFTA Pre-Awards Gathering

During the BAFTA Film Awards weekend, a significant gathering for South Asian cinema took place in London, emphasizing the growing recognition and influence of South Asian creatives in the film industry. The event was co-hosted by Society O, a British cultural platform dedicated to amplifying Asian voices, and Product of Culture, a U.S.-based strategy and distribution company. This gathering brought together nominees, filmmakers, executives, and industry leaders to celebrate achievements and discuss the importance of representation in cinema.

Geeta Gandbhir, a double Oscar-nominated filmmaker, was a prominent voice at the event. She highlighted the interconnectedness of global struggles, stating, “We fight this fight, but what happens in the U.S. has a ripple effect around the world.” Gandbhir's documentary “The Perfect Neighbor” is nominated for both a BAFTA and an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, while her co-directed film “The Devil Is Busy” is nominated for Best Documentary Short Film. The event also marked a reunion of the cast from “Goodness Gracious Me,” a landmark BBC sketch comedy series that significantly contributed to British Asian representation on television. The reunion included notable figures such as Sanjeev Bhaskar, Meera Syal, Kulvinder Ghir, and Nina Wadia, who had not gathered together in a decade.
