As the highest-paid Winter Olympic athlete, Gu's financial success includes partnerships with both Chinese and Western companies, reportedly earning an estimated $23 million in 2025 alone.

In light of the backlash against Gu, fellow athletes have voiced their support. Kelly Curtis, a veteran women's skeleton athlete and Air Force staff sergeant, expressed her respect for Gu's accomplishments, stating, "She is the most decorated freestyle skier, so she's at the top of her run, and I have nothing but respect for her." Similarly, AJ Edelman, an American who represents Israel in bobsledding, defended Gu's choice, emphasizing that every athlete has a unique journey and should not be questioned for their decisions. Edelman remarked, "It is absolutely inappropriate and extreme" for anyone to demand loyalty based on nationality.

In contrast, Gu's financial backing has been substantial, with reports indicating that she and fellow American-born figure skater Zhu Yi received nearly $14 million from the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau over three years for their Olympic preparations.

Despite her success, Gu has faced intense scrutiny, particularly regarding her stance on China's human rights record. In an interview, she stated, "I haven’t done the research. I don’t think it’s my business," when asked about the alleged persecution of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Gu expressed feeling like a "punching bag" amid the backlash, revealing that she has experienced threats and harassment, including physical assaults and robbery.

The criticism directed at Gu contrasts sharply with the reception of other athletes who have chosen to compete for different countries. For instance, Zoe Atkin, who was born in the U.S. but competes for Britain, has not faced similar scrutiny. Gu noted, "People only have a problem with me doing it because they kind of lump China into this monolithic entity, and they just hate China."
