Global Startup Competition Aims to Bridge Investment Gaps in AI

2/22/2026, 8:21:51 PM

Overview of the Initiative

In response to the increasing challenges faced by startups in securing visibility and investment, Deel has launched “The Pitch,” a global startup competition aimed at identifying and promoting Seed-stage founders worldwide. This initiative comes at a time when the barriers to launching a company have diminished significantly, yet competition for attention and capital remains fierce, particularly in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

The Competitive Landscape

Despite the accessibility of cloud infrastructure and technical expertise, the concentration of venture capital (VC) in established innovation hubs has created a visibility gap for many startups. Between February and May 2025, North American AI and machine learning startups attracted over $69 billion in VC funding, while European and Asian ventures received $6.4 billion and $3 billion, respectively. Israel, with a smaller market, raised approximately $15.6 billion, primarily focused on AI. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by startups outside these major geographies, as they often struggle to gain the same level of investment and market attention.

Structure and Goals of "The Pitch"

Deel's competition is structured to provide a direct path to investment for promising startups, regardless of their geographic location. The program includes an investment pool of more than $15 million and is expected to attract over 20,000 startups from seven countries. The competition will kick off in Tel Aviv on March 23, 2026, with 40 Israeli startups participating in the regional finals. Winners from this event will receive media and brand support from ReBlonde PR, enhancing their visibility in the market.

The competition is designed to expedite the fundraising process, which can traditionally take months. Applications opened on February 5, and the entire cycle from application to the global finale is expected to last approximately three months. Deel anticipates a final acceptance rate of about 0.05%, making it one of the most selective startup competitions globally.

Regional Finals and Global Finale

The competition will feature seven in-person regional finals in major tech hubs, including Dubai, Singapore, New York, Paris, London, and Berlin. Up to 100 regional-round winners will receive a $50,000 investment, with the global finale in Abu Dhabi potentially awarding up to $1 million to each of ten selected ventures.

Criticism & Opposition

While the initiative aims to democratize access to funding, some critics may argue that the highly selective nature of the competition could still favor those with existing networks or resources, potentially sidelining truly innovative ideas from less connected founders.

Conclusion

Deel's "The Pitch" represents a significant effort to address the visibility and funding disparities faced by startups in the AI sector. By providing a structured competition with substantial investment opportunities, Deel aims to foster innovation and support emerging entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, ultimately contributing to a more equitable startup ecosystem.
