Skyrim: Anniversary Edition Patch 1.2 Enhances Nintendo Switch 2 Experience

Major Improvements in Patch 1.2

Two months after its December release, Bethesda has launched update 1.2 for *Skyrim: Anniversary Edition* on the Nintendo Switch 2. This patch addresses significant issues from the initial release, introducing two display options: a 60fps performance mode and a 30fps visuals mode. The update also resolves several bugs, crashes, and Joy-Con mouse control issues. The initial version faced criticism for high input latency, reaching up to 293ms, which was partially mitigated by Patch 1.1. However, this earlier update inadvertently removed the 30fps cap, leading to erratic performance fluctuations.

Performance Enhancements and Visual Adjustments

The 60fps performance mode has shown considerable success, maintaining a consistent frame rate in most dungeons and open-world scenarios. For example, the route from Helgen Keep to Whiterun City now runs at nearly 60fps, a significant improvement from the previous 30-35fps range. However, the mode is not without its drawbacks, as it experiences occasional frame drops during busy scenes, particularly in towns and during battles. The performance mode employs a dynamic resolution that can drop as low as 576p under heavy load, resulting in a softer image quality compared to the 30fps visuals mode, which maintains a native 1440p resolution.

In portable mode, the performance mode's resolution can fall to as low as 640x360, further degrading image quality. Additionally, visual settings such as foliage detail and shadow draw distance are reduced to sustain performance, leading to less visually rich landscapes.

Input Latency Improvements

Input latency has seen marked improvements in Patch 1.2. The jump test now shows a response time of 218.5ms, a 75ms reduction from the launch version. The analogue stick camera response has also improved, with a latency of 146.4ms, down from 237.7ms. In the performance mode, the jump response time is recorded at 120.8ms, comparable to the PlayStation 5 version. These enhancements indicate that Bethesda has actively worked to address the input lag issues present at launch.

Criticism and Remaining Issues

Despite the improvements, some critiques remain. The game still requires a substantial 53GB download, larger than on other platforms, partly due to the inclusion of all language packs. Additionally, while the performance mode is a significant upgrade, it does not match the performance levels seen on other current-generation consoles. The visual compromises made to achieve 60fps have also drawn criticism, as they impact the overall aesthetic quality of the game.

Conclusion: A Step Forward for Skyrim on Switch 2

In summary, while *Skyrim: Anniversary Edition* on the Nintendo Switch 2 is not without its flaws—such as frame-rate drops and image quality degradation in portable mode—Patch 1.2 has significantly improved the gaming experience. The enhancements in latency and the introduction of a functional 60fps option elevate the Switch 2 port from a disappointing launch to a more acceptable version of the game. Bethesda's responsiveness to player feedback is commendable, reflecting a commitment to improving the product.
