Art UK Celebrates Milestone with New Leadership and Expanded Digital Access

Art UK, a charity dedicated to cataloging the UK's public art collection, has announced a significant milestone: it has reached one million artworks in its online database. This achievement coincides with the appointment of Ben Terrett as the new chair, who emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the extensive collection that includes not only famous pieces but also lesser-known artworks housed in various public spaces.

Founded with the goal of digitally cataloging paintings, Art UK has expanded its mission to encompass a wide range of artistic mediums, including drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and street murals. The database serves as a comprehensive resource, allowing users to explore diverse artworks, such as a bronze Rodin sculpture located outside a Nando’s in Harlow and over 6,000 pieces by JMW Turner. Terrett noted that the database is a valuable tool for discovering artworks that are often overlooked, particularly those in hospitals and council buildings.
