Chi Ossé and Shahana Hanif Join NYC Democratic Socialists of America Council Bloc

On February 10, 2026, New York City Council Members Chi Ossé and Shahana Hanif officially joined the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) City Socialists in Office (SIO) bloc. This move doubles the bloc's representation in the City Council, which now includes Ossé, Hanif, Tiffany Cabán, and Alexa Avilés. The decision followed overwhelming support from local DSA branches, with Ossé receiving 620 votes in favor and 18 against, while Hanif garnered 511 votes for and 62 against. At the citywide leadership level, Ossé received unanimous support with 59 yes votes, and Hanif received 52 yes votes against seven no votes.

Both Ossé and Hanif have complex histories with the DSA. Ossé initially sought the organization's endorsement during his first campaign but left in frustration after not receiving it. He rejoined the DSA last year during Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign and sought another endorsement for a congressional primary against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, which he did not receive. Ultimately, he abandoned that congressional bid but remained with the DSA. Similarly, Hanif sought the DSA's endorsement in her 2021 campaign but was endorsed by another candidate. She won that race and has since acted as an ally to the DSA.

As new members of the SIO bloc, Ossé and Hanif are expected to meet weekly with DSA representatives and coordinate on legislative strategies and messaging. NYC-DSA Cochair Gustavo Gordillo emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating, “With Zohran as Mayor and with our elected officials organized and working together, we can deliver on a true affordability agenda for working people in New York City.”
