NAACP Image Awards Introduces Gaming Category, Highlighting Diversity in the Industry

For the first time in its history, the NAACP Image Awards is recognizing the gaming industry with the introduction of the Outstanding Digital Content Creator – Gaming/Tech category. This new category will be featured during the 57th NAACP Image Awards, which will commence with a three-day virtual streaming event on YouTube starting Monday at 8 p.m. Among the nominees are notable figures such as Berlin Edmond Jr., Cory Kenshin, Jay-Ann Lopez, Khleo Thomas, and Gerard Williams, widely known as HipHopGamer.

Gerard Williams emphasized the importance of this new category, stating that NAACP President Derrick Johnson expressed a desire to engage with the gaming community, particularly among minorities and Black individuals. Williams noted, “We need to reach out to... a lot of Black people, period, that’s also in this area... we got to meet them where they are.” This initiative reflects a broader recognition of the gaming industry's influence and the need for representation within it.

Gerard Williams has established himself as a prominent figure in gaming journalism and community outreach. His work includes initiatives like Playmakers, a partnership with Chase Bank aimed at enhancing financial literacy through gaming in New York City schools, and a rehabilitation program for inmates at Rikers Island, supported by Denzel Washington. Williams also made his debut as a character in the video game “Mutant Football League 2,” which features his likeness and music.

Reflecting on his nomination, Williams expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “Being nominated for the first time ever that this category even exists... it makes me just go right back to grandma when I was four years old.” His journey in gaming began with encouragement from his late grandmother, which has shaped his passion for the industry.

Regardless of the outcome at the NAACP Image Awards, Williams views the establishment of the gaming category as a significant step toward acknowledging the contributions of the Black community in gaming. He recalls his experiences at the E3 convention in 2008, where he faced challenges in a predominantly white industry. Williams remarked on the racism he encountered, stating, “One of the reasons why I learned business so much so fast within the gaming industry is because I was met with racism, too.”

Williams is set to host the Games Beat Summit at the GDC Festival of Gaming in March in San Francisco, with aspirations to become a gaming anchor on “Good Morning America.” He remains optimistic about the future of diversity in gaming, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities rather than succumbing to negativity.
