White House Pushes AI Companies to Address Rising Electricity Costs

The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers has contributed to a significant increase in consumer electricity prices, with the average national rate rising by over 6% in the past year. This situation poses a challenge for political incumbents ahead of the upcoming elections. In response, President Donald Trump addressed the issue during his recent State of the Union speech, emphasizing that major tech companies have a responsibility to manage their own power needs. Trump stated, “We’re telling the major tech companies that they have the obligation to provide for their own power needs.”

In light of the rising electricity prices, several major tech companies have already pledged to mitigate the impact of their operations on consumer energy costs. Microsoft announced on January 11 that it would ensure the electricity costs associated with its data centers would not be passed on to residential customers. Following this, OpenAI committed on January 26 to cover its energy expenses to prevent increases in consumer prices. Similarly, Anthropic made a pledge on February 11 to absorb any electricity price hikes resulting from its data center operations. Additionally, Google revealed plans for the world’s largest battery project to support a data center in Minnesota.

White House spokesperson Taylor Rodgers indicated that next week, representatives from these companies will formally sign a pledge at the White House. Companies expected to attend include Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Oracle, and OpenAI. However, attendance has not been confirmed by the companies themselves. Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of informal agreements, stating, “A handshake agreement with Big Tech over data center costs isn’t good enough. Americans need a guarantee that energy prices won’t soar and communities have a say.”
