Introduction of C360 Capture System
The National Hockey League (NHL) has partnered with Cosm to implement ultra-high-resolution camera systems across all NHL venues during the 2025-26 season. This multiyear agreement aims to enhance various aspects of the game, including instant replay, officiating, player safety, statistics tracking, and digital content creation. The technology, branded as the “C360 Capture System,” captures footage in 10.5K resolution and integrates with Cosm’s cloud-based production platform, CX Video Hub.
Implementation Across NHL Venues
Each of the NHL's 32 arenas has been equipped with four C360 Capture Systems—one positioned behind each net and one at each blue line. These cameras are integral to the NHL’s official blue line reviews and are utilized by the league's digital team for creating unique short-form content. The systems provide production crews with multiple high-resolution angles of game action that can be manipulated for live or on-demand use.
Key Features and Benefits
The C360 Capture System enhances the quality of instant replays and offers isolated puck and player tracking feeds through integration with the NHL EDGE tracking system. This capability is not only beneficial for content creation but also for monitoring player health and safety. Additionally, the system allows for the logging of key plays in a togglable database and aids in analyzing the performance of game officials, including their positioning and the accuracy of their calls. According to Devin Poolman, Cosm’s Chief Product & Technology Officer, the system will support over 1,500 NHL games each season, generating substantial data traffic to the cloud.
Official Statements & Responses
Devin Poolman emphasized the significance of the scale of this technology deployment, stating, “That scale is really quite powerful. There are days in which we are pushing to the cloud the equivalent of about 450 ultra-high-definition streams simultaneously.” However, Poolman did not disclose the financial details regarding the cost of the NHL deployment or the pricing of the systems.
Criticism & Opposition
While the NHL and Cosm present the C360 Capture System as a significant advancement, some critics may raise concerns regarding the implications of increased surveillance and data collection in sports. The focus on technology could also lead to debates about the human element in officiating and the potential for over-reliance on technology in decision-making processes.
What's Next
As the NHL prepares for the upcoming season, the integration of the C360 Capture System is expected to transform how games are broadcasted and analyzed. The league will likely continue to explore additional applications of this technology, potentially influencing other sports leagues to adopt similar systems in the future.
