Navantia and Fincantieri Collaborate on European Patrol Corvette Programme

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia and Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly coordinate and execute the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) programme. This initiative is part of the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) framework, which is one of Europe’s most ambitious defense initiatives, supported by the European Defence Fund (EDF) through the Multi Mission Patrol Corvette (MMPC) programme. The EPC project aims to design and develop a modular, multipurpose, and interoperable corvette-type vessel, involving 46 companies from 12 countries, including Italy, Spain, France, and Greece.
Project Phases and Funding
The EPC programme is currently in its first phase, approved by the EDF in 2021, which focuses on achieving a certified design and building prototype platforms for two versions: the Full Combat Multipurpose vessel and the Long-Range Multipurpose patrol vessel. In its 2023 call, the EDF allocated €154 million (approximately $181.5 million) for the next phase, which will cover further design work and the start of prototyping.
