Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Kicks Off with Economic Boost and Community Engagement

The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg officially commenced with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on Thursday morning, attended by St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, INDYCAR President Doug Boles, race co-owners, and local drivers. This year’s event features the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series street race on Saturday, contributing to an estimated annual economic impact of over $60 million for the local area.

Mayor Welch emphasized the significance of the Grand Prix, stating, "The number of people it attracts to our city year after year and the economic impact of those visits... generate about $60 million in economic impact for the city of St. Pete." This influx supports local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and shops. Boles highlighted the community aspect of the event, noting, "We do more than just spend money in the restaurants... this really does feel like a second home to those of us in Indianapolis."

This year, race organizers have introduced enhancements such as upgraded grandstands and additional video boards for fans. Local business Mazzaro’s Italian Market is sponsoring a truck for the NASCAR race, with General Manager Robert Smith expressing excitement about the partnership. "It’s a huge opportunity... and it’s an honor for us to get involved in the first race," Smith stated. The truck's design features elements celebrating Italian culture, showcasing the community's involvement in the event.

The weekend's festivities include a "Party in the Park" event featuring driver appearances, food trucks, and family-friendly activities.
