Rising Threats Against Australian Politicians: A Growing Concern

Recent police data reveals a significant increase in violent and menacing threats directed at Australian politicians and their staff, with incidents doubling over the past two years. This alarming trend reached a critical point when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from The Lodge in Canberra due to a bomb threat linked to the Chinese performance group Shen Yun, which is associated with the Falun Dafa movement, known for its opposition to the Chinese Communist Party. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has responded by establishing National Security Investigations teams to address politically motivated violence and hate crimes that threaten social cohesion.

Since October 2025, at least 21 individuals have faced charges related to threats against politicians. Allegra Spender, an independent MP, reported receiving a threat of "rhetorically raping" her after she condemned a neo-Nazi rally, leading to the arrest of a prominent neo-Nazi. Additionally, threats against Communications Minister Anika Wells and Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers have resulted in charges against individuals for threatening their lives. Senator Fatima Payman has also highlighted the daily barrage of hate and death threats her office receives, particularly following her departure from the Labor Party.

In a Senate estimates hearing, Senator Payman questioned how political staff could assess the seriousness of threats, noting that her team had been advised by federal police to maintain a dossier on incidents. She expressed frustration over the lack of proactive measures, asking, “Why must we wait for a massive catastrophe to take place for us to take something seriously?” A recent survey indicated that 85% of politicians have encountered violent threats, with 46% experiencing such behavior more than once a month. Recommendations from the report include regular security assessments of electorate offices and improved guidance for staff on reporting threats.

Senator Payman criticized the current approach to handling threats, emphasizing the emotional toll on her and her team as they monitor social media for violent comments. She described many of the threats as originating from "sad, lonely, pitiful keyboard warriors," yet underscored the necessity of vigilance. The establishment of a fixated threat assessment team aims to evaluate escalating behaviors, potentially leading to mental health interventions rather than solely police action.
