Novo Nordisk A/S has announced a significant investment of €432 million ($506 million) to upgrade its manufacturing facility in Athlone, Ireland. This expansion aims to enhance production capabilities for its recently launched Wegovy weight-loss pill, which has been described as one of the most successful drug launches in history. The investment will allow Novo Nordisk to meet both current and future demand for its oral GLP-1 treatments outside the United States, where Wegovy has already gained traction.
Kasper Bødker Mejlvang, Novo's executive vice president of chemistry, manufacturing, and controls, emphasized the importance of this investment in strengthening the company's ability to supply the growing demand for its products. The facility currently employs 260 staff and is expected to create up to 600 construction jobs during the upgrade process, which will be completed gradually from the end of 2027 through 2028.
Competitive Landscape and Market Challenges
Novo Nordisk's investment comes amid increasing competition from Eli Lilly, which has also expanded its production capabilities in Ireland. Analysts have noted that Novo's stock has suffered, falling as much as 5.7% following a downgrade by Goldman Sachs due to lower expectations for its next-generation drug, CagriSema. This has raised concerns about Novo's future competitiveness in the weight-loss market, where it has historically held a strong position.
Despite the challenges, the company has reported that 246,000 patients are currently using the oral Wegovy in the U.S., with prescriptions outpacing earlier rollouts of existing GLP-1 injections. However, Novo Nordisk has faced supply issues in the past, which allowed compounding pharmacies to produce cheaper alternatives during shortages. While these supply issues have been resolved, the presence of copycat versions continues to impact sales.

Criticism and Opposition
Despite the positive outlook from company officials and government representatives, some analysts remain cautious about Novo Nordisk's ability to meet global demand for Wegovy. Sydbank analyst Søren Løntoft Hansen pointed out that, even with the new investment, it will be a challenge for Novo to fulfill demand for the pill outside the U.S.
