Ipas Receives Major Funding from The Audacious Project for Abortion Access

The Audacious Project, an initiative of TED, recently announced a significant investment of $1.03 billion in a new cohort of grantees, which includes Ipas, an international reproductive justice organization. This marks the first time The Audacious Project has funded an organization specifically focused on abortion access since its inception in 2018. While the exact amount of funding for Ipas remains unspecified, a representative indicated it would be in the “multi-millions.”

Ipas aims to utilize this funding to expand access to safe abortion and contraception globally, particularly in ten high-need countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Mexico. The organization has set ambitious goals to prevent 16.3 million unsafe abortions and 22.6 million unintended pregnancies by 2032, with a target of reducing unsafe abortions by 30% in these regions by 2040.

Anu Kumar, CEO and President of Ipas, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that every year, there are 121 million unintended pregnancies worldwide, with 61% resulting in abortions, many of which are unsafe. Kumar highlighted that approximately 35 million people resort to unsafe methods for ending pregnancies annually, leading to potentially fatal consequences. Ipas's approach focuses on dismantling systemic, legal, and social barriers to safe abortion care, advocating for policy changes, and challenging societal stigmas surrounding abortion.

The funding from The Audacious Project is seen as crucial, especially in light of the precarious nature of aid funding tied to contraception under previous U.S. administrations. Ipas aims to create sustainable, systemic change that benefits individuals, families, and communities, thereby contributing to global gender equality goals. Kumar noted that ensuring women and girls can control their own bodies is essential for their participation in education and economic life.
