Ron Duguay's Battle with Stage 4 Cancer: A Journey of Hope and Support

Ron Duguay, a former NHL player known for his time with the New York Rangers, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in December 2024. The diagnosis came after he experienced significant health issues while visiting his girlfriend, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, in October 2024. Following a series of tests, Duguay learned that the cancer had progressed, leading to the loss of both his gallbladder and appendix. Despite the severity of his condition, Duguay approached his diagnosis with determination, stating, “I was just all in — go hard, let’s hit this hard.”

Duguay has pursued a variety of treatment options, including chemotherapy and alternative therapies. His regimen includes high doses of Vitamin C, with Duguay reporting that he has increased his intake to 75 grams. He has also explored unconventional treatments such as ivermectin and blood filtering through an ozone machine, which he believes may help combat cancer. Additionally, he is considering traveling to treatment facilities in Mexico, Russia, or Germany for therapies not yet available in the United States, such as hyperbaric chamber treatment.

To alleviate the financial burden of his medical expenses, Duguay's family launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $120,000. His daughter, Shay Thomas, explained that the decision to seek public assistance was not taken lightly, as Duguay had been reluctant to discuss his financial struggles. “We spoke as a family and we said, ‘We need to make this GoFundMe. We gotta do everything we can. Because if we don’t, it’s going to kill you,’” Thomas stated. The funds raised have allowed Duguay to consider various treatment options that would otherwise be financially prohibitive.

Throughout his battle, Duguay has received significant emotional and logistical support from his family and Palin. Thomas described Palin as a “huge source of support” during this challenging time, noting that she has been present during critical moments, including surgeries. Despite the distance between them, Duguay and Palin maintain a close relationship, although their time together has been limited due to Duguay's health and Palin's family obligations.

While the GoFundMe campaign has garnered widespread support, it has also faced criticism. Some individuals questioned why Duguay, a former professional athlete, would need financial assistance. Thomas addressed these concerns, clarifying that the family is not as financially secure as some may assume. “I see so many things where people are like, ‘He has millions of dollars from back in the day,’” she remarked.

Duguay has expressed a desire to use his experience to raise awareness about colon cancer and encourage others to seek screenings. He has also reflected on the importance of accepting help from others, stating, “I’ve been having to be reminded… that you have to accept it.” As he continues his fight against cancer, Duguay remains hopeful for recovery and aims to return to his charitable work once he is well.
