Israeli Paralympian Sheina Vaspi Prepares for Cortina Games Amidst Personal Loss

Sheina Vaspi, Israel's first and only Winter Paralympian, is set to compete in the Milano Cortina Paralympic Games, which commence next week. Vaspi, who is 24 years old, will participate in several events, including the women's Super-G standing event and the alpine combined, while opting out of competitions scheduled on Shabbat, including the downhill event. Her decision reflects her commitment to her religious beliefs, as she grew up in a Chabad household in Yesud Hama’ala, northern Israel.

In the past two years, she has faced the loss of her cousin, Captain Arnon Benveniste Vaspi, who was killed in combat in Gaza in November 2023, as well as the passing of her grandmother. Additionally, she endured a serious injury in January 2025 that required extensive recovery time, including a torn ACL in her only knee. Despite these hardships, Vaspi has remained determined to represent Israel on the international stage.

She stated, “For me, to represent Israel, especially now, has an enormous significance... these past two years haven’t been easy at all.” Vaspi emphasized her commitment to competing, noting, “I chose to keep going, in part because of the knowledge that without me, the flag of Israel won’t be at the Paralympic Games, and in my eyes, it’s so important just to be there.”
