The Journey of Jason Barnes: Innovating Prosthetics Through Drumming

Jason Barnes, a drummer, faced a life-altering challenge when he lost his arm in an accident. Following the incident, he moved back in with his mother and struggled with feelings of loss and despair, particularly regarding his ability to play music. After a month of inactivity, he decided to confront his situation by setting up his drums and improvising a way to play using a taped drumstick attached to his prosthetic arm. Despite the pain, this moment marked a turning point in his recovery and determination to return to music.

Motivated by his desire to play again, Barnes began developing a custom drumming prosthetic. His initial attempts involved a simple design using mouldable plastic and rubber bands. With time, he refined his approach, eventually collaborating with a professor of music technology at Georgia Tech and his students. This partnership led to the creation of advanced prototypes, including a prosthetic that utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance drumming capabilities. The current version features six electrodes that detect electrical activity in Barnes's remaining muscles, allowing for precise control of the prosthetic.
