Brecksville-Broadview Heights Gymnastics Team Aims for 23rd Consecutive State Title

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights gymnastics team, known as the Bees, is set to compete for their 23rd consecutive Ohio high school state title. This remarkable streak began in 2004, establishing the Bees as a dominant force in high school gymnastics. Senior gymnasts Rachel Kirin and Kyla Haverdill acknowledge the immense pressure that comes with such expectations, with Haverdill stating, “Most people don’t understand that – it’s just so expected.” Head coach Maria Schneider, who has been with the team throughout this journey, also feels the weight of the legacy, emphasizing that the stakes rise with each passing year.

The Bees face unique challenges as a public school team, which prohibits them from recruiting gymnasts. This limitation was evident during the 2024 state meet when the team narrowly secured victory over Magnificat High School, a private institution. Haverdill recalled, “We thought we lost. We fully thought we lost.” The team’s success often hinges on minute adjustments to routines, reflecting the competitive nature of high school gymnastics.

Most of the Bees began their gymnastics training at Gym World, a local private gym, which has fostered a strong community among the athletes. Schneider, the daughter of Gym World founders, and assistant coach Leah Miko, who also trained there, emphasize the importance of a supportive environment. Kirin described Gym World as a second family, highlighting the deep connections formed among teammates.

The Bees prioritize mental health alongside athletic performance, incorporating sessions called “Psychobabble” to help gymnasts build confidence and manage expectations. Kirin noted the individualized coaching approach, stating, “They know us all very well and they know how to kind of coach all of us according to how we are.” This tailored support is crucial in preparing the athletes for the pressures of competition.
