A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene found that firefighters' heart rates increased by a median of seven beats per minute with loud alarms, compared to five beats per minute with systems that gradually increased volume. Dr. Jay MacNeal, one of the study's authors, stated that a ramp-up approach leads to lower heart rates and less stress on firefighters' bodies.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has recognized the need for such systems, reporting that out of 51 on-duty firefighter deaths in 2024, 20 were attributed to sudden cardiac events. In response, the NFPA issued new standards advocating for alert systems that begin at lower volumes and utilize calm, computerized voices. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), representing over 360,000 firefighters and paramedics, supports these progressive-volume systems but is calling for standardized guidelines regarding their design and implementation.

Despite the positive reception of the new systems, there is a recognized gap in research regarding the optimal design for firefighter alert systems. Sean DeCrane, the IAFF's assistant to the general president for health and safety, highlighted the need for industry standards that define decibel levels, intervals, and integration of visual alerts. He emphasized that such standards should be informed by research to ensure the safety and well-being of firefighters.
