Title Pursuit Begins Against Fresno State
The UNLV Lady Rebels are set to commence their quest for the Mountain West women's basketball tournament title on Sunday against Fresno State. After a disappointing semifinal exit last season at the hands of San Diego State, the Lady Rebels are determined to reclaim their championship status, having previously won the title three consecutive times from 2022 to 2024. UNLV enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed, boasting a regular-season record of 20 wins and 10 losses, with a conference record of 15-5.
In their regular-season finale, UNLV secured a decisive 76-47 victory over Boise State, which not only solidified their second seed but also provided them with a first-round bye in the tournament. Forward Shelbee Brown played a pivotal role in this victory, contributing a season-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. Additionally, both Brown and teammate Meadow Roland received All-Mountain West postseason honors, highlighting their significant contributions throughout the season.
Key Players and Performance
Meadow Roland, who led the Lady Rebels in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game, was named to the All-Mountain West first team and All-Defensive team. She ranked third in the league for scoring and was the second-leading rebounder, averaging 9.53 rebounds per game. Shelbee Brown, on the other hand, led the conference with an average of 10.5 rebounds per game and was the only player in the Mountain West to achieve a double-double average in both points and rebounds this season. Head coach Lindy La Rocque praised both players for their outstanding performances, stating, “Meadow and Shelbee have both had tremendous conference seasons. Both are very deserving of recognition.”
Fresno State's Challenge
Fresno State, the No. 7 seed in the tournament with a record of 15 wins and 17 losses, advanced to the second round after defeating No. 10-seeded UNR 74-57. The Bulldogs have faced UNLV twice this season, losing both matchups by scores of 85-59 and 68-54. Under the leadership of head coach Ryan McCarthy, who was hired in April of the previous year, Fresno State employs a fast-paced "mayhem" style of basketball, characterized by a full-court press and aggressive defense. The Bulldogs lead the Mountain West in several defensive categories, including turnovers forced per game (18.6), steals per game (9.7), and three-point percentage defense (27.8). Guard Emilia Long is the team's leading scorer, averaging 13.3 points per game.
Looking Ahead
As the Lady Rebels prepare for their matchup against Fresno State, their focus remains on executing their game plan to secure three victories in three days to clinch the championship. The tournament presents an opportunity for UNLV to demonstrate their resilience and reclaim their title in the Mountain West conference.
