In a separate incident on Saturday, Hamilton police responded to multiple reports of individuals falling through the ice near the Pier 7 Boardwalk. Two youths initially fell through the weakening ice, prompting several bystanders to attempt a rescue, which resulted in additional individuals also falling into the water. Officers arrived on the scene and utilized rescue bags to assist those in the water, successfully bringing six individuals to safety.
One of the youths, who had been submerged for a brief period, was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Hamilton police emphasized the dangers of ice conditions, particularly as temperatures across Ontario have begun to rise, leading to unstable ice. They warned residents that ice that appears solid can quickly become thin and unsafe, urging the public to refrain from venturing onto frozen lakes, ponds, and waterways.
