U.K. Cinema Achieves Record 40 Oscar Nominations for 2026

The British Film Institute (BFI) and the British Consulate-General Los Angeles are celebrating a record-breaking awards season for U.K. cinema, with U.K. productions and co-productions earning a total of 40 nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards. This includes five nominations for Best Picture, highlighting the significant contributions of British filmmakers and talent to the global film industry. The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 16, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Chloé Zhao's film “Hamnet,” which explores themes of grief through the lens of William Shakespeare's life, leads the U.K. nominations. The film features a predominantly U.K. cast and creative team, including nominated producers Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes, composer Max Richter, and production designer Alice Felton. Notably, casting director Nina Gold has made history as the first British nominee for the newly established Academy Award for Best Casting. Irish actress Jessie Buckley is nominated for Best Actress, and if she wins, she will become the first to achieve this honor in the category. Zhao and Northern Irish novelist Maggie O’Farrell, whose book inspired the film, are nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
