The study, published in the journal *Scientific Reports*, indicates that astronauts on long-term lunar missions could potentially grow their own food, reducing reliance on resupply missions from Earth.

Experiment Details and Findings

The research team conducted their experiment in a climate-controlled growth chamber, using a lunar soil simulant produced by Space Resource Technologies, which mimics the composition of lunar samples collected during the Apollo missions. The results showed that chickpeas could be successfully harvested from soil mixtures containing up to 75% lunar simulant. However, as the proportion of lunar regolith increased beyond this threshold, the number of harvestable chickpeas declined, with plants in 100% regolith failing to flower or produce seeds.

The addition of vermicompost, a nutrient-rich material created by earthworms, played a crucial role in supporting plant growth. The fungi used to coat the seeds formed a symbiotic relationship with the chickpeas, enhancing nutrient absorption while mitigating the uptake of heavy metals present in lunar soil.

Importance of Local Food Production

The ability to grow food on the moon is essential for sustaining astronauts during extended missions. Sara Oliveira Santos, a postdoctoral researcher and principal investigator of the project, emphasized the importance of developing local food sources, stating, “In our goal toward establishing a lunar presence... we will need to learn how to grow food on the moon.” This is particularly relevant as both the United States and China plan to return astronauts to the moon in the coming years.

Safety and Nutritional Concerns

Despite the successful growth of chickpeas, questions remain regarding their safety and nutritional value. Researchers are currently testing the harvested chickpeas for metal accumulation to ensure they are safe for consumption. Jessica Atkin, a doctoral candidate and lead author of the study, noted, “Before anyone makes moon hummus, we need to confirm they are safe and nutritious.” The results of these safety assessments are expected to be published later this year.

Future Implications

This research marks a significant milestone in extraterrestrial agriculture, paving the way for future studies on crop production in space. The findings suggest that with further development, lunar farming could become a reality, supporting human life on the moon and potentially other celestial bodies. As Oliveira Santos remarked, “This is a small first step toward growing crops on the moon, but we have shown this is feasible and we are moving in the right direction.”
