Yukio Shirahige, a former radiation survey worker, noted that some local food products still exceed safety limits, highlighting the complexities of recovery. “Radiation levels have come down significantly over the past 15 years, but I wouldn’t use the word ‘safe,’ just yet,” he remarked. The Fukushima prefecture continues to test thousands of samples annually, but restrictions remain on certain agricultural products from former no-go zones.

Tokyo Electric Power Holdings Company (TEPCO) is actively working on decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi plant, employing advanced technologies such as micro-drones and remote-controlled robotics to safely analyze and remove melted fuel debris. Akira Ono, head of decommissioning at TEPCO, stated that the focus is on reducing radiation risks while ensuring worker safety. However, the process is expected to take decades, with significant challenges remaining.
