Waymo's Autonomous Vehicle Incident Raises Safety Concerns

On Saturday in Austin, Texas, a driverless Waymo vehicle was filmed stopping between railway tracks and a stopping barrier while a train passed just inches away. The footage, shared on TikTok by Tristyn K Donovan, shows the vehicle with the crossing arm resting on its roof as the train sped by. At the time of the incident, there were no passengers in the vehicle. According to Waymo, the car had been approaching the railroad crossing at 22 mph and began to decelerate approximately 13 meters from the crossing gate, stopping at a distance deemed safe by the vehicle's systems.

The company acknowledged the concern raised by the vehicle stopping past the crossing gate and announced a temporary restriction on its vehicles' travel at similar crossings while conducting a thorough analysis of the incident. Waymo also confirmed that a second similar incident had occurred recently, where a vehicle traveling at approximately 20 mph stopped 2.5 meters from the tracks after the crossing gate.

Footage from that incident showed the autonomous vehicle obstructing the street, prompting a police cruiser to arrive and communicate with the vehicle via its speaker system. The Waymo vehicle eventually moved into a parking garage after a minute. Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz stated that authorities did not believe the incident hindered emergency responders' efforts, but it raised concerns about how autonomous vehicles interact with emergency situations.
