Scrutiny Surrounds Epstein's Death: Guard's Google Searches and Suspicious Deposits

On August 10, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City, with the medical examiner ruling his death a suicide by hanging. Just minutes before his body was discovered, Tova Noel, one of the guards assigned to monitor him, conducted two Google searches for “latest on Epstein in jail” at 5:42 a.m. and 5:52 a.m. Epstein was found dead by fellow guard Michael Thomas at 6:30 a.m. During the night leading up to his death, both guards were accused of failing to perform mandated checks on Epstein, instead reportedly browsing the internet and sleeping.

In addition to the alarming online searches, Noel's financial activities have raised further questions. Chase Bank flagged a series of cash deposits into her account, including a notable $5,000 deposit made just ten days before Epstein's death. In total, records show that Noel made twelve deposits amounting to $11,880 from April 2018 to July 2019. Despite these suspicious transactions, Noel was never charged with any crime related to her financial activities.

Noel has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In a sworn statement to the Department of Justice in 2021, she claimed, “I don’t remember doing that,” in reference to the Google searches, and questioned the accuracy of the FBI's records. She also stated that it was common practice for guards to falsify records regarding inmate checks, asserting, “I’ve never worked in the Special Housing Unit and actually done rounds every 30 minutes.” Following Epstein's death, both Noel and Thomas were fired, but criminal charges against them were ultimately dropped in December 2021 as part of a plea deal.
