San Francisco's Dream Keeper Initiative: A Controversial Revival

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has relaunched the Dream Keeper Initiative, a program originally established by former Mayor London Breed in 2021. The initiative aims to allocate $36 million to various community-serving organizations, focusing on providing services such as “Afri-centric” mental health support, African ancestry DNA testing, and doula services for Black birthing individuals. The initiative was initially funded by diverting $120 million from the city’s police budget in response to the social unrest following George Floyd's death.
