3/13/2026, 1:46:02 PM

Overview of Copilot Health

On March 12, 2026, Microsoft announced the launch of Copilot Health, an AI-powered feature designed to assist users in understanding their health information. This tool operates within a separate, secure environment of the existing Copilot platform, allowing users to analyze their medical records, wearable data, and health history. Users can import medical records from over 50,000 U.S. hospitals and healthcare organizations through HealthEx and integrate lab results via Function. Copilot Health supports data from more than 50 wearable devices, including Apple Health, Oura, and Fitbit.

Key Features and Functionality

Copilot Health aims to empower users by providing personalized health insights. It enables users to ask questions about lab results, track health metrics, and prepare for medical appointments. The AI analyzes patterns in the data to offer actionable insights, such as identifying potential health risks based on user history. For instance, during a demonstration, the AI flagged inadequate sleep as a cardiovascular risk for a user with diabetes and high blood pressure.

The tool also connects users to real-time U.S. provider directories, allowing them to search for healthcare professionals by specialty, location, and insurance plans. Microsoft emphasizes that Copilot Health is not intended to replace medical professionals or provide diagnoses but rather to enhance users' understanding of their health data.

Privacy and Security Measures

Microsoft has implemented stringent privacy controls for Copilot Health. Conversations and data are isolated from the general Copilot app, and the company assures that health data will not be used for training AI models. Users can delete their information or disconnect data sources at any time. Although Copilot Health is not currently HIPAA-compliant, Dr. Dominic King, VP of Health at Microsoft AI, stated that HIPAA compliance is not mandated for direct-to-consumer applications involving user-managed data. The tool has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification, promoting responsible AI use.

Criticism and Concerns

Despite its potential benefits, experts caution users about sharing personal health information with AI platforms. Concerns include the possibility of inaccurate medical advice and the evolving nature of data privacy policies. Previous studies have indicated that AI tools can sometimes underestimate the severity of health issues, raising alarms about their reliability in critical situations.

Official Statements

Microsoft has highlighted its commitment to user privacy and data security. In a press briefing, Dr. King noted, “We think it’s incredibly important that we’re meeting all the best standards out there.” The company aims to provide a comprehensive health companion that enhances users' interactions with healthcare providers.

What's Next

Copilot Health will be rolled out in phases, with a waitlist currently open for interested users. Microsoft plans to expand language support and additional features based on user feedback and clinical evaluations. As the landscape for digital health tools evolves, Microsoft positions itself as a significant player in consumer health technology, responding to the growing demand for accessible health information.
