Israel Proposes Iron Dome Production in Germany Amid Security Concerns

Israel has extended an offer to Germany to bolster its defense capabilities by manufacturing the Iron Dome air defense system on German soil. This proposal comes in response to escalating threats from Iranian missile attacks, emphasizing the importance of advanced defense technologies in safeguarding European security. Yuval Steinitz, a board member of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the company behind the Iron Dome, highlighted the system's effectiveness in intercepting short-range missiles and drones, stating, “We would be happy if we could export more technology, more know-how to Germany, thereby also creating jobs in Germany.”

The Iron Dome, operational since 2011, has been credited with saving thousands of lives and preventing significant economic damage in Israel. Steinitz noted that since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, nearly 50,000 projectiles have been launched at Israel, underscoring the system's critical role in national defense. He warned that a lack of defense in Europe could lead to vulnerability against threats from Iran and other nations.

In addition to the Iron Dome, Steinitz introduced the Iron Beam laser weapon system, which offers a cost-effective alternative for missile and drone defense. He explained that the cost of a laser shot is approximately $2, significantly lower than traditional missile interceptors, which can range from $5 million to $10 million. The Iron Dome itself is noted for its affordability, with each interceptor missile priced at around $150,000.

Rafael already manufactures several defense systems in Germany, including the Trophy anti-tank system and the Multi-Role Light Guided Missile System (MELLS). Steinitz asserted that local production of the Iron Dome could substantially reduce defense costs for cities like Berlin and enhance the overall security of Europe.

While the proposal has been framed as a means to enhance European security, some critics may raise concerns regarding the implications of increased military collaboration between Israel and Germany, particularly in light of historical sensitivities surrounding arms production in Germany.
