Uber Technologies, Inc. and Motional, an autonomous vehicle technology company majority-owned by Hyundai Motor Group, have launched a new robotaxi service in Las Vegas. Starting today, riders can request an all-electric Motional IONIQ 5 robotaxi through the Uber app at no additional cost. The service is initially available at designated locations along Las Vegas Boulevard, including rideshare zones at Resorts World Las Vegas, Encore at the Wynn Las Vegas, Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, and curbside in Downtown Las Vegas and the Town Square shopping district.
How the Service Works
Riders requesting UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Motional robotaxi. Upon matching, riders receive a notification and can choose to accept the autonomous ride or switch to a traditional vehicle. Once the robotaxi arrives, riders unlock the vehicle using the Uber app and are greeted with audio prompts reminding them to close the doors and fasten their seatbelts. To increase their chances of being matched with a robotaxi, users can opt in through the Ride Preferences section in the app settings.
Safety and Support Features
Safety is a primary focus for both Uber and Motional. The IONIQ 5 robotaxis comply with Uber’s Autonomous Safety Guidelines, and human support is accessible through the app if needed during a trip. Initially, a trained vehicle operator will monitor the road from behind the steering wheel, with plans to transition to a fully driverless service by the end of 2026.

The launch is part of a broader collaboration established in 2022, when Uber and Motional signed a 10-year framework agreement aimed at scaling autonomous ride-hailing services. This partnership followed successful pilot programs, including an autonomous delivery service for Uber Eats in Los Angeles and a ride-hailing pilot in Las Vegas. Motional has conducted over 130,000 autonomous rides through its early commercial pilot programs, showcasing its experience in the field.
