Tungsten Prices Surge Amid Supply Constraints and Geopolitical Tensions

3/16/2026, 9:56:25 PM

The Current Market Landscape for Tungsten

Tungsten, a critical metal used in defense and technology applications, has seen its prices soar to record levels, reaching approximately $2,250 per metric ton unit. This represents a staggering increase of 557% since February of the previous year when China imposed export controls on certain tungsten products amid a trade dispute with the United States. The surge in prices is attributed to a combination of rising military demand and significant supply constraints, particularly as Chinese shipments of restricted tungsten products fell by about 40% last year, according to Project Blue.

Factors Driving Demand and Supply Constraints

The demand for tungsten is expected to rise, especially in military applications, with Project Blue estimating a 12% increase in consumption this year. Tungsten's unique properties make it ideal for use in missile components, artillery shells, and aircraft counterweights, as its density allows projectiles to maintain momentum and penetrate armor. The geopolitical climate, particularly conflicts in the Middle East, has further intensified this demand, pushing manufacturers to seek alternative sources of tungsten.

China dominates the tungsten market, accounting for approximately 79% of global production, which was around 85,000 metric tons last year. However, the country has faced challenges, including deteriorating ore quality and tighter mining quotas, leading to a decrease in output. As a result, Western manufacturers are increasingly looking for alternative supplies, with companies like Almonty Industries beginning production at a tungsten mine in South Korea and exploring the development of the first U.S. tungsten mine in a decade.

Official Statements & Responses

Almonty Industries CEO Lewis Black noted the urgency of material availability, stating that U.S. authorities contacted the company regarding immediate tungsten needs. He emphasized that the market is now determining prices, a shift from previous conditions where Chinese subsidies kept prices artificially low. The current tightness in the market has led to a seller-dominated environment, where suppliers have significantly increased their bargaining power.

Criticism & Opposition

Despite the rising prices, some experts caution that the current market conditions may not be sustainable. David Argyle, co-founder of Arlington Innovation Partners, described last year's export restrictions as a geopolitical maneuver rather than a genuine effort to preserve local supplies. He also indicated that while prices may continue to rise in the short term, the market could stabilize within 24 months.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

While the tungsten market is experiencing significant price increases, there are discrepancies in reports regarding the sustainability of these trends. Some analysts suggest that the current supply-demand imbalance may be temporary, while others warn of persistent constraints due to geopolitical tensions and rising production costs.

What's Next?

As the market adjusts to these new realities, the future of tungsten pricing remains uncertain. The potential for increased mining in countries like Spain, Brazil, and Australia exists, but new output is unlikely to materialize for at least two years. Meanwhile, the ongoing geopolitical tensions and rising defense spending are expected to keep demand high, further complicating the supply landscape.
