Lion Cub's Food Coma Captured in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Photographer Johan J Botha recently documented an amusing scene in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, where a lion cub was observed in a state of exhaustion after a substantial meal. The encounter occurred in January, during midsummer, when temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Botha encountered a lion family that had just fed on a gemsbok, capturing moments of their behavior post-feeding.

Upon Botha's arrival, the lion family had already consumed most of the antelope. He photographed a male lion lifting its head while feeding, making eye contact with the camera before engaging in grooming behavior. Following their feast, the lions displayed playful interactions, with one cub attempting to play with its father. However, the combination of the intense heat and a full stomach led to a quick transition from playfulness to rest, as the cub settled down for a nap.

Lions exhibit a feast-or-famine lifestyle, often gorging on large meals after successful hunts. A male lion can consume up to 90 pounds of food in one sitting, which can be as much as 20 percent of its body weight. This behavior is a survival strategy, allowing lions to sustain themselves during periods when hunting may not be successful. Following such a large meal, lions, like humans, experience lethargy, prompting them to rest and digest.
