Sercel noted that there are approximately 250 potential target asteroids, with diameters up to 20 meters, that could be accessed using reusable robotic spacecraft within the next decade.

Target Locations and Resources

The proposed processing facility for the captured asteroids could be situated at the Earth-Sun L2 point, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. TransAstra plans to aggregate multiple small asteroids at this facility, targeting specific types based on their content. For instance, C-type asteroids may serve as sources of water, while M-type asteroids could provide valuable metals.

Collaboration and Development

TransAstra is collaborating with several institutions, including the University of Central Florida, Purdue University, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory/Caltech, to refine the mission plan, trajectory, and spacecraft requirements. If fully funded, the mission could potentially rendezvous with an asteroid as early as 2028 or 2029.

While the mission has ambitious goals, some experts express skepticism regarding the feasibility and practicality of capturing and relocating an asteroid. Concerns include the technological challenges of such an endeavor and the economic viability of harvesting materials in space compared to traditional methods on Earth.
